The Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy

To protect the Ocean, we first need to understand it.

Here at EightyOne, we’ve always said we want to change the world. Well, this project is our chance to do just that as we support the United Nations in their efforts to better understand and care for our Ocean.

The following videos, based on the Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy, will help launch the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which runs from 2021 to 2030.

To raise global awareness of the Seven Principles, EightyOne partnered with Flinch Marketing to help UNESCO enlist seven of the world's leading ocean science advocates, from legendary oceanographer, Sylvia Earle to the billionaire and philanthropist, Ray Dalio.

Join us on an amazing journey to the heart of humankind's timeless connection with our one, shared Ocean.

Principle 1: The Earth has one big Ocean with many features

Narrated by Francesca Santoro / Ocean Literacy Specialist / Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO

Having beautiful footage of the Ocean isn't enough on its own. To give the footage meaning, we worked with the world’s leading voices on Ocean science.

Principle 2: The Ocean and life in the Ocean shape the features of the Earth

Narrated by Vladimir Ryabinin / Executive Secretary / Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission

Principle 3: The Ocean is a major influence on weather and climate

Narrated by Sylvia Earle / Oceanographer & Explorer

Principle 4: The Ocean makes the Earth habitable

Narrated by Peter Thompson / UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean

The Ocean is of course incredibly complex, our challenge was to distill each video into a single minded, inspiring narrative.

Principle 5: The Ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems

Narrated by Asha De Vos / Marine Biologist and Educator

Principle 6: The Ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected

Narrated by Ray Dalio / Co-founder / OceanX

Principle 7: The Ocean is largely unexplored

Narrated by Wendy Schmidt / Co-founder / Schmidt Ocean Institute
